George Jenkins, Publix’s founder, liked the name of the movie theater group, which once ran 19 opulent theaters in Florida, according to The Palm Beach Post. Conveniently for Jenkins, many branches of the company were closing their doors in the 1930s due to the Great Depression, so he adopted the name for his burgeoning chain of supermarkets.
In a speech later published as “The Publix Story,” Jenkins said he borrowed the name when he opened his first Publix Food Store in Winter Haven in 1930.
